Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, friends! New Year’s Day traditionally marks the end of the holiday season, and with that we’ll bring our “Holiday Recipes” series to a close… but never fear! There are plenty of recipes in store for you in the coming year. Speaking of the New Year, does anyone have a fun get-together planned for ringing in 2012? Do tell.

Today’s recipe would be the perfect quick and easy finger food recipe if you’re doing some hosting… cheesy sausage balls!

Simple and delightfully tasty. Here’s how it’s done:

Easy Cheesy Sausage Balls

Yields about 35 servings


1 lb. sausage

1/4 c minced onion

12 oz shredded cheddar cheese (feel free to get creative with your variety of cheese – try sharp or mild cheddar or even Monterrey cheese…. whatever suits your tastes)

2 cups dry biscuit mix

1 tsp (or more) garlic powder

salt + pepper to taste


Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Shape into balls with hands. Place on ungreased sheet pan. Bake in preheated oven for 18 minutes. Voila!

So let’s talk traditions. Every New Year’s Day when I was growing up, my mom made cornbread, black eyed peas, and collard greens (cooked with a ham bone or hog jowl). These traditional southern dishes supposedly bring good luck in the coming year. I’m curious… do you have a traditional New Year’s Day cuisine? What and why?
